Cut, Fade, and Turn Any Song Into a Ringtone

The tool was built around two jobs people constantly need done: shortening a track down to a usable ringtone, and stripping an unwanted section — a cough, a long pause, an ad read — out of the middle of a recording. Both are one workflow here: drag to select, pick Keep or Remove, adjust fades and volume if you like, then export.

Zoom in as far as 128× to place a cut on an exact beat or word boundary, then zoom back out using the minimap strip to see where you are in the whole file. Every edit — a dragged handle, a mode switch, a preset click — is remembered, so a misplaced cut is one Ctrl+Z away.

How to Cut an Audio File

  1. Add your file — click the upload area or drag an MP3, WAV, M4A, OGG, or FLAC file onto it. Decoding happens instantly and a waveform appears.
  2. Select the part you want — drag the two handles on the waveform to mark your selection, or drag the middle of the highlighted zone to slide the whole selection without changing its length. Zoom in with the + button, Ctrl-scroll, or a pinch gesture for sample-accurate placement.
  3. Choose Keep or Remove — Keep exports only what is inside the handles; Remove deletes the highlighted section and stitches together what is left, the fast way to cut a section out of the middle of a track.
  4. Add fades and adjust volume — pick a fade-in and fade-out length from 0.5 to 3 seconds so a cut point never sounds abrupt, and either set a manual volume boost/cut or check Normalize to bring the loudest peak to a consistent level automatically.
  5. Pick a ringtone preset (optional) — the iPhone and Android chips jump straight to a 30-second selection with a short fade-out already applied, so making a ringtone takes one click plus export.
  6. Choose your format and export — WAV gives you an uncompressed master; MP3 lets you pick 128, 192, or 320 kbps. Click Trim & Export and the file downloads immediately.

WAV vs. MP3, and Which Bitrate to Pick

WAV is uncompressed: what you hear in the preview is exactly what you get, with none of the file-size savings of compression. It is the right choice for a mixdown you are about to import into audio software or hand off to someone else for further editing. MP3 shrinks the file substantially by removing audio the human ear will not easily notice, encoded here at your choice of 128, 192, or 320 kbps. 320 kbps is close to indistinguishable from the source for most ears and most content — the default a lot of listeners reach for. 192 kbps is a sensible middle ground for a ringtone or a voice clip where file size matters slightly more than absolute fidelity. 128 kbps keeps files tiny, which is fine for spoken word but starts to show its limits on dense music.

Which audio file types can I load into the cutter?

The tool accepts MP3, WAV, M4A, OGG, FLAC, and most other formats your browser's audio decoder understands — if your browser can play it, this tool can almost certainly load and cut it. The exported result is always WAV or MP3, regardless of what you uploaded.

Does the audio file get uploaded to a server?

No. Loading, waveform rendering, trimming, fading, volume changes, and both WAV and MP3 encoding happen entirely inside your browser using the Web Audio API and a JavaScript MP3 encoder. Nothing about the audio itself leaves your device at any point in this workflow.

How do I turn a song into an iPhone ringtone?

Click the iPhone-length preset to select 30 seconds with a short fade-out, adjust where the selection starts if needed, then export as WAV or MP3. Apple's Clock app needs the file in M4R format and 40 seconds or under, so run the exported file through a free M4R converter, GarageBand's ringtone export option, or our sister audio cutter on kliptools.com, which exports M4R directly.

How do I make an Android ringtone?

Click the Android preset to select 30 seconds with a fade-out already applied, export as MP3, then copy the file into your phone's Ringtones folder using a file manager, or add it through Settings → Sound → Phone Ringtone. Android accepts MP3 ringtones with no format conversion needed.

What's the difference between Keep mode and Remove mode?

Keep mode exports only the audio between your two selection handles — everything else is discarded. Remove mode does the opposite: it deletes what is between the handles and stitches together the audio that comes before and after, seamlessly joining the two remaining pieces into one file.

How do I remove a section from the middle of a song?

Switch to Remove mode, drag the handles over the part you want gone — a cough, a skipped beat, an unwanted verse — and export. The tool joins what is left before and after the cut into a single continuous file, so you do not have to trim and stitch two separate exports yourself.

Can I add a fade-in or fade-out?

Yes. Choose a fade-in length and a fade-out length independently, from off up to 3 seconds each. Fades are applied after your selection is extracted, so a cut point never starts or ends abruptly — useful for ringtones and for smoothing the join point in Remove mode.

What do the Volume slider and Normalize checkbox do?

The volume slider scales the output from 0% (silent) to 200% (double amplitude) — useful when a clip was recorded too quietly or you want it louder. Normalize instead automatically raises (or lowers) the whole selection so its loudest peak sits at a consistent −1 dB, usually a better choice than guessing a percentage by ear. Checking Normalize disables the manual slider since the two options are not meant to combine.

Should I export as WAV or MP3?

WAV keeps every bit of the original audio with no compression — pick it if you are handing the file to another program or want the highest possible quality. MP3 is smaller and plays everywhere, which is what you want for a ringtone, a voice clip to text to someone, or anything you are uploading somewhere with a size limit.

Which MP3 bitrate should I choose?

320 kbps is the highest quality this tool offers and is close to indistinguishable from the original for most music. 192 kbps is a solid default that balances quality and file size well, especially for ringtones. 128 kbps produces the smallest files and is fine for spoken-word clips, but can sound noticeably compressed on dense music.

Are there keyboard shortcuts?

Yes. Space toggles preview playback, the arrow keys nudge the selection start (Alt+arrow nudges the end), Shift makes those nudges a full second instead of a tenth, +/- zoom in and out, 0 fits the whole track back into view, and Ctrl+Z / Ctrl+Y undo and redo your last change. Shortcuts are ignored while a text field is focused.

Can I undo a mistake?

Yes. Every committed change — finishing a drag, applying a preset, switching Keep/Remove mode — is saved to an undo history up to 50 steps deep. Press Ctrl+Z to step back or Ctrl+Y (or Ctrl+Shift+Z) to redo.

Is there a limit on file size or length?

There is no hard limit built into the tool itself, but very long files (well over an hour) take your browser longer to decode and render a waveform for, and use more memory. Typical songs, podcast clips, and voice memos load and process almost instantly.

Does this work on my phone?

Yes. Drag handles work with touch, pinch-to-zoom works the same as Ctrl-scroll on desktop, and the layout adapts to a phone screen. You can load a file from your phone's storage or a cloud app and export directly to your device's downloads.

Why doesn't this tool export M4R directly?

M4R is technically a renamed AAC file, and encoding AAC in a browser reliably requires a server-side conversion step that this particular site does not run. Rather than fake it, this tool sticks to WAV and MP3, both of which you can convert to M4R afterward with a free converter, or use our other audio cutter on kliptools.com, which does perform that conversion server-side.

Can I zoom in to make a cut on an exact word or beat?

Yes. Use the + button, Ctrl/Cmd + scroll wheel, or a two-finger pinch to zoom in up to 128×, then fine-tune the handle position with the arrow key nudges for sample-level accuracy. The minimap strip below the waveform always shows where your zoomed-in view sits within the full track so you don't lose your place.
